Beauvais Carpets

By appointment

Antique Oriental and European carpets and tapestries, with custom reproduction and broadloom for the design trade.

Beauvais Carpets is a dealer in antique carpets and tapestries on the second floor at 36 East 57th Street, and the distinction between a dealer and a showroom is the whole character of the place. Beauvais owns what is on the floor, so the inventory is what exists rather than what can be reordered.

The gallery deals in decorative antique Oriental and European carpets and in tapestries, and alongside the antique stock it runs new carpets, custom work and reproductions for the design trade. A room that needs a specific antique can be searched, and a room that needs the same character at a size no antique will supply can be woven to order instead.

Restoration and conservation are done in the gallery's own workshop rather than sent out, and when a repair needs yarn that no longer exists the workshop spins and dyes it to match. For a client buying a two hundred year old carpet to put under a dining table, who does the repairs is a more useful question than who sold it.

Visits are by appointment, Monday to Friday. The gallery works through named sales representatives rather than a counter, so arrange the first visit with one.

An antique carpet is the one element in a scheme that cannot be specified twice. Bring the floor plan and the actual dimensions to the appointment, because the search runs on size first and colour second, and a carpet that is perfect and four inches short stays four inches short.
