Celso de Lemos makes bed linen and its New York flagship is a street level shop at 294 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side, which makes it the rare house in this trade a client can be sent to alone.
The cloth is woven in Portugal, where the company has worked for more than forty years, and the cotton is extra long staple from Giza. That combination is the whole specification: staple length is what makes a sheet smooth without a finish applied to it, and a finish is what wears off. Beyond flat sheets and duvet covers the house works in embroidery, which is where a monogram or a border is set at the time of order rather than added afterwards.
Percale and sateen in the same cotton feel entirely different and photograph identically, and a client who has asked for crisp and a client who has asked for soft are asking for different weaves of the same thread.
A shop rather than a trade suite changes who can be sent. A designer can specify from here and a client can be sent to confirm a hand without an account or an appointment, which shortens a decision that otherwise runs through swatch posts.
Settle the bed dimensions before the embroidery is ordered. Embroidered linen is cut and finished to a size, and a deep mattress or a custom bed, which is common enough in New York, will need the sizing confirmed rather than assumed from a standard king.
