The David Sutherland Showroom holds a suite in the New York Design Center at 200 Lexington Avenue. The building is open to the public. This showroom is not. It is exclusive to the trade, so a homeowner arriving without a designer will get as far as the lobby.

What it carries is the group's own houses alongside represented lines. Sutherland is the outdoor furniture, built in teak and worked with named designers rather than drawn in house, and Perennials is the performance fabric and rug side. Both are sold to the trade through more than forty showrooms domestically and abroad, and this is the New York one.

Teak on a New York terrace has to be specified knowing it will silver unless it is maintained, and that is a conversation to have with a client before delivery rather than in the second summer. Perennials solution dyed acrylic is the other half of the answer, because the frame surviving the winter is only useful if the cushions do too.

Seeing the fabric and the frame in the same room is the practical gain. Specifying an outdoor scheme usually means a furniture showroom and a fabric showroom and a guess about how the two will look together.

Take the terrace exposure to the appointment. A south facing roof and a shaded courtyard are different specifications in both teak finish and fabric grade, and the showroom can answer that in one visit if it is asked rather than after a scheme is drawn.
