Dennis Miller holds a suite in the New York Design Center at 200 Lexington Avenue. An architect, Dennis Miller, founded it in 1984, and Justin Orlansky has owned it since 2020. The showroom is open to the public and it sells to the trade, and it takes both.

What it carries is more than forty contemporary makers across furniture, lighting, textiles, wallpaper and rugs. Bert Frank and Boyd Lighting on the lighting side, Robert Kuo, Michael Berman and American Leather among the furniture, alongside a run of twentieth century pieces still in production.

The lighting is the part of the floor worth the visit on its own. Bert Frank and Boyd are made rather than assembled, and the difference between a machined brass fitting and a cast one is visible at arm's length and invisible in a specification. A designer choosing between two pendants at similar money is choosing on that, and a photograph will not show it.

Robert Kuo's work is the other reason. Hand repoussé metal is slow to make and the lead times reflect it, so a piece that anchors a room needs ordering at the point the room is designed rather than when it is being finished.

A scheme that would otherwise be four purchase orders and four deliveries becomes one, which matters most at the end of a job when the installation date is fixed and the pieces have to arrive together rather than eventually.
