Hamilton Sinkler has designed and made architectural hardware in New York since 2001, and the nineteenth floor at 363 Seventh Avenue is an office showroom rather than a shop. The company sells through decorative showrooms across North America, so the room on Seventh Avenue exists for specification rather than for buying.
What it carries is the whole envelope of metal a set of drawings has to name. Door hardware runs in two collections, Revival and Metropolitan. Then cabinet hardware, bath suites, and vents and registers, which is the category most often left to the mechanical contractor and most often regretted. Custom work sits alongside the catalogue: the Versa lever, the Elizabeth Scott suite, sculpted pulls and embossed knobs.
Finishes are where the floor earns its keep, because the count differs by category and that governs whether a scheme can hold one metal throughout. Cabinet hardware runs to fifteen finishes including antique brass and oil rubbed bronze. Revival door hardware runs to seven. Bath suites come in three, polished nickel, chrome and brushed nickel. The Heritage pieces come only in bronze patina.
Visits are by appointment, Monday to Friday between 10 and 4. Design professionals can order free samples and there is a finish sample booklet, which is the thing to have in hand before a finish is committed.
What Hamilton Sinkler does that a showroom counter does not is the schedule. They will build the hardware schedule, model in three dimensions, quote against it and issue the installation instructions, which turns the most error prone document in a fit out into something a joiner can work from. Send the door schedule before the appointment and the visit becomes a review rather than an introduction.
