Hudson Furniture makes large scale sculptural furniture and lighting, and its New York showroom is at 90 Broad Street in the Financial District, away from every other address in this guide. Barlas Baylar founded it in 2004 in the Meatpacking District and it has since put showrooms in other cities.

The work is made by the company's own artisans in a New York atelier, which is rare enough in this trade to be the reason to go. Slab wood tables, bronze and nickel, lacquer, and chandeliers built at a size that assumes a double height room. Baylar sources timber himself, so a table is a specific slab rather than a model number, and two of the same design will not be the same object.

A Hudson table is chosen the way a stone slab is chosen, by going to see the actual piece, and a client who has approved a photograph has approved a category rather than a thing.

Scale is the other reason to visit rather than specify. These pieces are drawn for rooms with height, and a chandelier that reads as generous in a showroom with a twenty foot ceiling will read as an obstruction at nine feet.

The showroom is open to the public on weekdays from 9 to 6 and takes no appointment.

Measure the route before the piece. A slab table and a large chandelier are made in one piece, and the constraint is rarely the room, it is the service lift, the stair turn and the apartment door. Get the dimensions of every opening on the path to the room confirmed before anything is ordered, because the workshop can build to a room it cannot reach.
