John Pomp Studios makes hand blown glass, lighting and furniture, and its New York work is shown from a suite in the New York Design Center at 200 Lexington Avenue. The building is open to the public and this showroom sells to the trade.

John Pomp is a glassblower as well as a designer, and the studio blows and fabricates in Philadelphia. John Pomp Studios puts that building at 65,000 square feet and the team at more than fifty. Glass and metal are both made in house rather than bought in and assembled, which is what allows a fixture to be altered in dimension rather than only in finish.

Custom is therefore the ordinary case rather than the exception. A pendant run can be made to a length, a drop can be set to a stair, and a chandelier can be scaled to a table instead of the table being chosen to suit a chandelier.

Hand blown glass varies piece to piece, and on this work the variation is the point rather than a tolerance to be minimised. Two shades from the same run differ, and a client who wants uniformity is asking for a different material.

Give the studio the section, not just the plan. A drop over a stair or a double height space is set by the sightline from below and from the landing, and those are dimensions a designer has and a maker does not. Settle the length on the drawing before the glass is blown, because a fixture shortened afterwards is a fixture remade.
