M2L is a furniture dealer on the second floor at 10 East 38th Street in Murray Hill, and it works both sides of the trade, contract and residential, from the same floor. It keeps galleries in Washington and Miami as well as New York.

What it carries is represented European lines rather than its own production, Tacchini and NORR11 among them, across seating, tables, storage, workspace, lighting, beds and outdoor. The contract side is the same catalogue specified differently, which is the useful part: a piece can be quoted in a residential grade and in a contract grade with the difference explained rather than guessed.

A designer doing a family apartment and a designer doing a lobby are choosing the same frame with different foam, different fabric ratings and different warranties, and the dealer who holds both can say what changes and what the change costs.

Murray Hill puts the floor within walking distance of the Madison Avenue houses and a short trip from the D&D, so this is a stop on a route rather than a destination in itself.

The showroom is open to the public on weekdays from 10 to 6 and takes no appointment. M2L sells to designers and to private clients, and the contract side runs through the same floor.

Ask for the contract specification even on a residential job when the piece is going somewhere hard. A sofa in a household with children and a sofa in a waiting room are closer to each other than either is to a show apartment, and the upgrade is a line on a quote rather than a different piece of furniture.
