Savoir Beds makes beds to order by hand in the United Kingdom, and the New York showroom is located at 200 Lexington Suite 611.

The house exists because of one commission. The Nº2, which Savoir calls The Icon, was made for the Savoy hotel in 1905, and it is still the model the range is organised around. Savoir puts it at over 80 hours of handwork. The Nº1, The One, is the top of the range at a figure Savoir gives as at least 120 hours. The Nº3 and the Nº4 sit between them, the Nº4 made after demand from hotels, and the Nº4v is the plant based version with no animal products. The Nº5, The Savvy, is the entry.

The Nº2 mattress is filled with horse tail hair, teased and laid by hand, over hand tied pocket springs encased in calico, and Savoir makes its own springs in soft, medium and firm. None of that can be assessed from a specification. It has to be lain on.

Sizing is bespoke and that is the practical point for a New York project. A bed can be built to a room rather than to a mattress standard, which matters in a prewar apartment where the bedroom was planned around a different set of dimensions.

The showroom is open to the public, Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 5:30 and Saturday from 11 to 5, and is by appointment only. A bed is worth trying at length, so a quiet hour is better than a busy one.

Each mattress is made by one craftsman for one client, so the lead time is a build slot rather than a stock draw. Settle the size against the surveyed room and get the order placed early in the program, because a bed that arrives after the client has moved in is a bed they will be sleeping around.
