100 Eleventh Avenue, 10011
100 Eleventh Avenue was designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel. The west elevation is a curtain wall of roughly 1,650 panes, and no two are set alike. Every pane is canted, between two and five degrees, up or down or left or right.
The wall was built as 210 prefabricated units. Each is a steel tube frame, a second layer of welded steel that generates the angles, then aluminium window frames and glass, then outer aluminium caps. A unit spans the full length of a room, so no joint runs through the middle of a view.
What this does to a room is remove every constant the perimeter usually supplies. Reveal depths differ pane to pane, the glass throws light back at a different angle in each one, and reflections move across the wall rather than sitting still. Nothing at that perimeter can be standardised or repeated, and anything cut to fit one opening will not fit the next. Windows are floor to ceiling and the operable ones face south and west.
