150 East 58th Street is the Architects and Designers Building, a tower of 1968 running to thirty nine floors, with the design showrooms occupying the lower part of it. Around forty showrooms trade here, weighted towards kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, tile, flooring and shading rather than towards furniture and textiles.
The building is open to the public, Monday to Friday, and says so without qualification. That is the difference from the D&D three blocks away, and it is the reason to send a client here first when the decision is a kitchen or a bathroom rather than a sofa.
The concentration is the point. Appliances, cabinetry, tile and stone are specified against each other rather than in sequence, and getting them into the same morning is the difference between a coherent specification and four that were each chosen well alone. A client who has seen one appliance line in a suburban showroom has not made a comparison.
Holly Hunt keeps a second New York showroom here alongside its D&D suite, and Poliform trades here as well as on Madison Avenue, so a few houses can be seen in either building.
An open door changes who the building is for. A designer loses nothing by it, and a homeowner gains the ability to do the early looking without an appointment and without an account, which is the part of a project where most of the wrong decisions get made.
