50 West 66th Street was designed by Snøhetta, sixty nine storeys and 127 residences. The structure carries a transfer system for the tower columns that also buttresses the building, and slosh tank dampers in the crown steady it against lateral movement.
It divides into two parts with a terrace at the join. The podium runs fifteen storeys, its curtain wall set out as a grid of two storey openings. Above the sixteenth floor the tower is more glass, gridded in thin bronze, with limestone giving the elevation its vertical rhythm.
The ceiling heights are the practical division. In the House residences of the podium they run up to about twelve feet eight inches. In the Tower they reach about fourteen feet six. That is a large enough gap that joinery, drapery and anything else drawn to a vertical dimension has to be specified per collection. The two storey openings in the podium also mean some rooms there meet a window that is taller than one floor.
