520 Park Avenue was designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects. It is 54 storeys and holds 34 apartments, of which 29 run the full floor, and it is set back fifteen feet from the entrance so the tower reads as a campanile rather than as a street wall.
It is clad entirely in Indiana limestone, warm in tone and chosen to take natural light in the manner of the New York apartment houses of the 1920s and 1930s. The elevation carries oversized bay windows and balconies punched into the stone.
The full floor plan is the thing to design to. With one residence to a floor there is no party wall to work against and the apartment has exposure on every side, so circulation runs around a core rather than along a corridor, and every room reaches an outside wall. The bays give each principal room a projecting alcove with glass on three sides, which behaves like the bays at Lantern House: excellent for seating, poor for anything needing a solid wall behind it.
