520 West 28th Street was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, eleven storeys and 39 residences beside the High Line. It was the practice's only building in New York.

The facade is hand worked steel, brushed and tinted, laid in interlocking chevrons with laser cut stainless trim, and the chevrons are not decoration. They express the split levels inside, so the pattern on the elevation follows where floors step against each other. No two apartments share a shape.

Two conditions follow. Ceilings are coffered and run around eleven feet, so anything mounted overhead sits within the coffer grid rather than on a flat plane, and lighting is laid out to that grid or it fights it. And because levels split within apartments, a plan here has changes of floor level inside the residence, which decides circulation and rules out long uninterrupted runs of anything.
