The Pierre

The Pierre was designed by Schultze and Weaver and opened in 1930, forty one storeys at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 61st Street. It was built as a hotel of more than seven hundred rooms, and in 1959 the upper floors were turned into 77 cooperative apartments.

The 1959 conversion is why the apartments vary as much as they do. They were made out of hotel floors, so they run from around a thousand square feet to four times that, some of them duplexes and some formed by combining neighbouring units. There is no repeating line through the building.

Ceilings in the principal rooms run around ten to eleven feet. That is generous for a converted hotel and lower than a purpose built apartment house of the same decade would have given, which matters when specifying anything vertical: joinery drawn to a Candela or McKim proportion will be too tall here.

The structural walls, the risers and the corridor positions are all hotel geometry from 1930, and they are the fixed points any plan has to accept.
