503 West 24th Street was designed by Peter Marino, eleven storeys holding five residences beside the High Line, with a gallery at its base. It replaced a filling station on the site.
The elevation is largely glass with thin black mullions, and the window sizes vary rather than repeating. The southwest corner is set back from the High Line and balconies are cut into the form there rather than projecting from it.
Five apartments in eleven storeys means every residence is unique in plan, so nothing transfers between them. The one constant is deliberate: the apartments were built with reinforced walls for hanging art, which is a structural provision rather than a finish and it decides where weight can go. Floors are heated hydronically, which rules out some floor build-ups and constrains what can be laid over them.
Varied window sizes with thin mullions mean the perimeter rhythm is irregular, so a repeating run of anything at the window wall will not align.
